Bloodbrothers

The blood began to set. It was my blood, it had only bled from inside of Willie. That log my mouth, my nose and my ears with its smell. It was my blood because we were bloodbrothers and because he had died when I arrived. I looked at him and could not help but think that he had waited and looked for me for over an hour. Now I also know that when they kicked him and mutilated his body, he had shouted my name. Every one of his cells had shouted my name and had accused me. I was still then driving my car in the morning rush hour of the downtown, therefore it could not be my fault. I sat in my car listening to the radio and changing gears so I did not have even the smallest chance to help him. They come in the morning with the light and leave when night arrives, when the darkness covers the town with its sheltering web.

I would have hoped that Willie would have fought back. He could have gotten one of them, at least one. He would have shown me and the restof the world that they were dangerous and were able to kill. Willie knew the same thing as I long before he had died. I would be the next. There was no other way. We were bloodbrothers and that meant that there really was no other choice.

My time had ended in a dirty bark hall this morning and I was tired. I was hungry and dead tired. Day was only at breaking. I left my car in a park place and went to eat. Steak and two beers. I should not have drunk, I knew, but sometimes it helped. I decided to go meet Johnny. Good old Johnny. His had a stomach ache as he always did but he didn't complain, only smiled. We chatted for a moment or it at least felt like a moment. Day changed into an evening, it was time for me to go. We did not say goodbye because we knew that we would meet again. Sooner or later. I drove to the edge of town where the darkness closed in its fathoms early when the sun began to fall. It was almost able to touch the darkness. I turned off the motor and listened. Soon I heard the voice I and began to follow it. I looked behind me and called for Willie. It was only a game and he knew it. I knew the path by heart and it was easy for me to walk. I went yet deeper to the gauze of darkness. I closed my eyes and saw Willie. Our eyes met and I heard the time quickwalking on our shoulders. I wanted to cling to the sun and take it to my arms and take it with me, but knew that it was too early.

When I arrived, the sun already had risen and Willie walked on my side. The time went on somewhere inside the earth. I called it. I tramped my foot and jumped into the air. Suddenly it got dark but I wasn't afraid. The world had ended, I had walked over the edge. The evil rubbed its soft fur against my cheek. I petted it and then let it go; it was not the time.

I fell and fell. I clung to the edge of moonbeam and drew myself into the light and shouted with the madness. It answered. The space fled from around me and the universe shrunk into a small crack in the shining pearlnecklace of the truth. I lived. For a small moment I was truly free. It was getting near dawn and it was time to return. I fell back into the broken reality and called for Willie. He followed me. I told him about Johnny and how he had a stomachache. Willie understood, there was no need to explain. Johnny was one of us. He had been one of us long before the time had ended.

Willie understood. Morning was just beginning and we still had a lot to do.
