Alvis

('All Wise'), in Germanic mythology, was a dwarf who was outwitted by Odin's son Thor, the possessor of a magic hammer of irresistible force. In payment for the weapons Alvis had forged for them, the gods promised that he could marry Thor's daughter Thrud. However, Thor was displeased with the arrangement and so devised a test of knowledge to stop the dwarf from marrying his daughter. When Alvis came to Asgard, Thor questioned him all night long because sunlight turned dwarfs to stone.
