were the 'heroic dead' of Germanic mythology. They were gathered from the battlefields by the Valkyries. In Valhalla, the Einherjar formed Odin's private army, which he raised to fight at Ragnarok, the doom of the gods. This was the final battle between the gods and the frost giants on the Vigrid Plain. Until then, these dead warriors would fight every day and feast every night, and any wounds they sustained were magically healed.
