son of the magician Hreidmar, was corrupted by the cursed ring Andvarinaut. Lusting after the fabulous ring-hoard, he slew his father, helped by his brother Regin. Greed made him monstrous in nature and form, as he turned into a dragon to guard his board. The legend of his treasure drew many aspiring heroes to his lair in search of fame and fortune. Most met their deaths on the blasted heath outside his lair, but the youthful Sigurd, armed with his father's sword and guided by Regin, outwitted the dragon and won his ill-fated treasure.
