('Howler') was a frost giantess, daughter of Geirrod, who, along with her sister Greip, tried to kill Thor, the Germanic thunder god. When Thor, accompanied by the fire god Loki, came to the hall of Geirrod, Gjalp did what she could to harm the visitors. Even before their arrival she added a torrent of her menstrual blood to a river in order to drown Thor and Loki. A well-aimed stone stopped Gjalp and sent her howling home. However, she and Greip then tried to ram the head of sleeping Thor against the rafters by suddenly raising his chair. The thunder god woke just in time to force the chair downwards by using a magic staff. Its massive weight broke the backs of the two giantess and they died in agony on the floor.
