Hymir

('Dark One') was a frost giant and, according to some traditions, father of the war god Tyr. Hymir had an enormous cauldron, so deep that it could brew ale for all the gods. Without this huge vessel, there was no way that the sea god Aegir could offer hospitality to Odin and his companions, so Tyr and Thor were sent to fetch it. When they arrived at Hymir's hall, Tyr's mother advised them to hide until she had explained their presence. Hymir found them and offered them a meal, though he felt uneasy. Thor astonished the assembled company by eating two whole oxen by himself. The next day their host suggested they go fishing if they wanted to eat again. Together they put to sea in Hymir's boat, Thor baiting his colossal hook with the head of Himinrjot, the giant's black ox. When the sea monster Jormungand took this bait and Thor set about its head with his hammer, Hymir shook with terror. In the confusion Jormungand tore itself free of the great hook and sank bleeding beneath the surface of the waves. Two whales had to suffice for food instead.

Back in Hymir's hall, relations between host and guest quickly deteriorated into violence. Goblets were thrown before Thor left with the gigantic cauldron. When Hymir and some frost giants attempted to follow him in order to regain the cauldron, Thor used his hammer to such effect that all were killed.
