Menu

or Menulis, was the Baltic moon god. The sun was imagined as the goddess Saule, the patroness of green snakes. The Letts believed that the stars were the children of Menu and Saule. The Morning Star, however, was said to have been the child of a love affair between Saule and Perkuno, the thunder god. For this reason the moon god, in shame and anger, avoided his spouse, and appeared only by night, while the sun goddess was happy to be seen all through the day.
